When I printed out the chart of Tuesday’s lunar eclipse (26 degrees Pisces, 7:34 p.m. pacific, September 17), I didn’t immediately see the hidden gem: a grand trine–the luckiest aspect in astrology–in earth signs.

A grand trine is a triangle that connects three planets or luminaries. And sometimes, there are extra planets that make their way into the configuration by virtue of conjunction.

But before I explain that in greater detail, let’s talk about what a lunar eclipse is. The scientific description first: the sun and moon in opposition, the earth at the midpoint of the two luminaries, casts its shadow on the moon. And my definition: It’s basically a full moon on steroids. So take the tension that is present on and around a full moon, and multiply it a few times (depending on where it falls in any particular chart that it aspects), and also ratchet up the stakes a few notches.

So, what we learn around and between eclipses, how we metabolize these lessons, and how we respond and adapt during this time has a larger-than-usual impact on our lives, those around us, and the world. Things are, simply put, more serious, and have more potential to make an impression on ourselves and the Universe (higher consciousness).

And yeah, around this time, sometimes $#!+ happens.

But, back to that grand trine.

So the planets involved are the sun, Pluto and Uranus. The sun represents our life force, but also the ego. The sun is energy and how we direct and use it (do we try to shine for our own ego’s benefit, or do we shed light on others?) Pluto is power and transformation, sometimes it represents people in positions of power. And Uranus is upset, disruption, and also revolution and innovative change.

Yep, that’s quite a trifecta. The two outer planets bring even more gravity and destiny-shaping quality to this time.

But is this good or bad? Didn’t I mention something about luck and opportunity?

Yep, but it’s, more often than not, the kind that piggybacks on some annoyance, inconvenience, or change in plans, or the proverbial opportunity disguised as work. And it may be hidden in the dark, or hard to see if you’re in a rush, overly focused on outcomes or appearances.

Kind of like a disagreement in a relationship is often an opportunity to have a deeper discussion and grow closer to your partner. Kind of like getting fired from a job you didn’t like anyway, but it paid well, so you weren’t trying to find a better one, but now you kind of have to.

Another thing that the chart of this lunation gives us is the moon conjunct Neptune, which heightens intuition and spiritual growth for those who are mindful and tuned-in, and deeper delusion for those who are not.

Mercury, the planet of communications, could bring a spot of trouble, with an opposition to Saturn and a square to Jupiter. While any aspect to Jupiter can ultimately be a good thing, one of the exceptions to this is when excess rears its head. Greed, compulsion and overreaching may cause unintended difficulties, especially since Saturn is pulling the other end of the rope. This might be a good time to say less, especially since eclipses have a way of revealing a little more than we may be comfortable sharing. This is particularly true where social media is concerned.

But there will be fun, luck and opportunity. Venus and Jupiter are in good aspect, which means all’s well that ends well. Again, the mantra “For what might this be good?” is worth sharing again.

Yep, this magical gateway between eclipses will be full of opportunities for leveling-up. But it’s also a bit like a video game, with seeming obstacles being hurled at you, testing boundaries and reactions. If you realize that challenges may abound during this time, and you make backup plans, and pack a sense of humor, a bit of acceptance and keep an eye out for what good may come of plot twists, you will navigate this time period well.

A few words on the upcoming Libra solar eclipse of October 2. This will be a good one, with opportunities for peaceful resolutions of interpersonal (and perhaps even international) conflicts. There’s another grand trine, this one in relational Venus and Mars, and rules-oriented Saturn, which means compromise will be necessary.

But it’s really good news that grand trines usher us in and out of the gateway, which is that between-eclipse period in which we can make a stronger impression on our higher consciousness of how we would like our lives to be. Make sure you envision and attend to with action those things that are most important to you now.

Start by clearing, releasing and de-cluttering, as habits of elimination are favored in the two weeks following a full moon/lunar eclipse. Do this in earnest, and some good things may show up around the solar eclipse.

Remember that revelations are common during the time around and between eclipses. Expect that the news may get more salacious, and that scandals and other improprieties may come out now. But you already knew that, as quite a bit has happened in the days leading up to the lunar eclipse. Yep, interesting times.
